Cladding of axisymmetric components – APFSDS penetrators

Clad rods can be manufactured in various design variants, including single- and multi-segment configurations. The segments may have different material properties and can have an impact on modification on the stress states in the penetrator during its operation. Multi-segment systems can be produced in a single cladding operation. The explosive cladding technology enables the simultaneous application of an additional ductile jacket layer onto a tungsten core, which may have a positive effect on the penetration range.

Cladding tests were performed on tungsten sintered materials specifically designed for APFSDS ammunition production and on a substitute material, 304 steel. The results obtained in both cases were very similar, allowing the use of 304 steel as a good substitute during the technological testing phase. The quality of the clad rods was assessed based on samples taken from different areas. The samples underwent liquid penetrant testing, and shear strength testing was carried out. The results ranged from 200 to 400 MPa, depending on the sampling location.

Advantages of cladded penetrators:

  • Increased stiffness
  • Increased resistance to ERA and NERA armor
  • Tungsten savings of at least 50% with comparable penetration ranges to traditional penetrators
